Product Description

PPG DX520 is a phosphoric acid based coating chemical that will produce a zinc phosphate coating on galvanized or steel surfaces. DX520 is pale green in color and may turn darker over time.

PPG Rust Converter DX520 - Phosphoric Acid Based Coating Review

Before I discovered DX520, I was using Dupont 5718s. The 5718s is about $30/qt, so there is quite a difference in price favoring DX520. However, I discovered that DX520 takes longer to produce the zinc phosphate coating. Dupont 5718s works in as little as 2 minutes but I usually go 5. DX520 needs at least 5 and usually 10, especially for spray applications. To use, you need to apply an acid etch first like Jasco metal prep, Dupont 5717s, or do what I do and buy the phosphoric acid and ethylene glycol yourself at a local chemical supply and mix with water. Use a red scotch brite pad with the etch to help open up the corrosion (rust) sites for the etch. The etch removes rust and creates microscopic fingers. Rinse with water, then while still wet apply DX520. The idea is to keep the surface wet at all times. For vertical surfaces, you'll want to apply every minute or so to keep fresh chemical on the surface. When done, the surface should take on a dark grey appearance. However, with the DX520, that's no guarantee it's done. Rinse with water and let it dry. After drying, it should take on a gray crystalline appearance with maybe some white streaks. If you didn't leave it on long enough, the part will start rusting again almost immediately (flash rust take on the appearance of an orange haze). If this happens, you've got to repeat. 10 minutes works with most parts in a spray application. Soaking is best, and that only takes a few minutes.
