Jeep Wrangler 90-06 DRIVER Inside Door Handle,OEM Mopar Review

This is one of those items that is better to stick with OEM than go aftermarket. The few dollars saved by buying a cheaper one just isn't worth it.

I recently had to replace the driver's side door handle on my 97 TJ and bought a cheaper one for a little more than 1/2 the price of this one on Amazon shipped. When I got it, the quality difference wasn't immediately apparent as I was replacing a broken, worn, 15 year old part. The clips on the aftermarket were a little smaller and installation took me a bit and I struggled to get the clips on. I finally got it all installed and 3 days later on my 6th time opening the door, the handle snapped in half. My previous breakage to the original part had been around the screw that holds the entire assembly in place but the handle itself was still intact. I figured I might be able to combine the two and make a good one. While it was possible, it was during the assembling of the new hybrid piece that I found another issue with the aftermarket that was going to cause problems had the handle not snapped in half so soon. The handle and lock button are held in place by 2 plastic arms on either side. The arms push down on the round plastic piece that pivots when you open the door. On the aftermarket one, these arms were just a tad bit shorter so instead of holding it firmly in place, there is slop and the pivot point moves back and forth putting more stress on the 2 plastic legs and allowing the pivot point move out of place. If the handle hadn't snapped, it would have failed there next. Probably sooner than later too.

Once I received the factory part, it was really easy to see the differences. The handle on the OEM has a thicker spring than the aftermarket one and gave more resistance when opening the door. Comparing the two springs, the aftermarket one is made from a smaller gauge wire. While it is easier to operate with a smaller spring, it also lended to a cheap feeling. The plastic used in the OEM replacement is thicker, the texturing is more pronounced and the color is darker and shiny. It felt more substantial in the hand than the aftermarket too. The aftermarket one was more of a hazy matte black with a texture that you could barely feel. It was a closer match to the worn 15 year old part than the new one. Like they had used an old part as a guide for their new one. The lettering for lock on the aftermarket one wasn't white but it was at least molded onto the lock button.

Installation of the OEM part was much easier taking me less than 5 minutes to install. The hole in the clips that the metal rods slide into is slightly larger and the rod went right in. The clips were also much easier to engage and they snapped right on. I didn't have to struggle with them at all and when they clipped into place, they locked. Comparing the two clips, you can see the OEM clips are open just slightly more and that the aftermarket is a little on the small side for the size if the rods. Just enough to make it more difficult to install. The OEM clip is just better matched to the size of the metal rod it goes on.

Seems like a lot of writing for a cheap part but I wasted a week or so of time and even though I got a refund on the broken part, I still ended up paying shipping twice. Save yourself the time and hassle and stick to the OEM part until they're not available anymore. I got 15 years of service out of the first one and I expect to get that out of the replacement. Another plus is that the OEM part looks a lot nicer too. Chances are you're replacing an old, worn out part and wouldn't really see the differences in appearance unless you saw two new parts side by side. The pictures all look too similar and don't really tell the story.

I purchased mine from the seller Avondale Auto Group on Sunday and had the part in hand on Wednesday. The part was sealed in the OEM bag and well packaged. They even used recycled, shredded paper to protect the part in the shipping box. All around a great transaction as well as a great deal on a factory part that was more than 2X as much locally. I'll certainly be getting another OEM one to replace the passenger side soon. The new one on the driver's side makes the old one look out of place now and with the money I saved over buying it from a local dealership parts dept, it'll be like getting it for free. ;)
